"Hans Sloane" Plate Plate

This is a plate. It was manufactured by Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory and after Georg Dionysius Ehret. It is dated 1753–1756 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is soft paste porcelain, vitreous enamels. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, established in London in 1745, was a short walk from the Chelsea Physic Garden, where the firm’s painters had access to an abundance of plants for in-person study. This book Figures of the Most Beautiful… contains drawings of more than 300 specimens of plants from the Chelsea Physic Garden, which were referenced for the decoration on these ten plates. While fashionable in subject matter and style, flowers, insects, and leaves also played a practical role to disguise flaws and imperfections in the plates’ delicate porcelain and glaze

Filling the top half of the plate, a cluster of large purple flowers with long pointed petals and curling yellow stamens atop a blue stem. Surrounding the flower, smaller insects in various colors. At twelve o'clock, a blue and green winged insect; at eight o'clock, a pale purple and yellow butterfly; at ten o'clock, a purple and yellow winged insect.

Round white porcelain plate with wavy brown-edged rim, painted with bindweed plant and insects. At center right and left, two trumpet-shaped flowers in purple and brown. The petals open out into purple ovals surrounding an eight-pointed brown star shape in each. The lower part of the flower is visible as a brown U-shape below the purple oval. Surrounding the flowers, large heart-shaped green leaves on a vine. On the rim of the plate, various insects. At twelve o'clock, a purple and yellow insect; at one o'clock, a round blue beetle; at three o'clock, a blue winged insect; at five o'clock, a multicolor butterfly in yellow, orange, blue, and purple; at nine o'clock, a blue winged insect.

The flower at upper right has upright white petals marked with orange. The stem below is purple, with yellow-green serrated leaves. A large curling leaf fills the bottom half of the plate, echoing the curve of the rim. Surrounding the stem, smaller insects and plants. At center, a purple winged insect; at four o'clock, a purple insect with folded wings; at nine o'clock, trumpet-shaped pale blue morning glory flowers; at eleven o'clock, a butterfly with brown, yellow, and purple wings.

A vase with wide base, getting slightly narrower towards the top. A layer of dark plants form the bottom. Lighter plants flourish in the middle and top sections. The top of the vase is flowerless, with a creamy coloring.
