"Hans Sloane" Plate Plate

This is a plate. It was manufactured by Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory and after Georg Dionysius Ehret. It is dated 1753–1756 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is soft paste porcelain, vitreous enamel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, established in London in 1745, was a short walk from the Chelsea Physic Garden, where the firm’s painters had access to an abundance of plants for in-person study. This book Figures of the Most Beautiful… contains drawings of more than 300 specimens of plants from the Chelsea Physic Garden, which were referenced for the decoration on these ten plates. While fashionable in subject matter and style, flowers, insects, and leaves also played a practical role to disguise flaws and imperfections in the plates’ delicate porcelain and glaze

An image of a magnolia flower cuves from the bottom a white plant to the top, its flower opening in the middle. Leaves of varying shades of green curl off of the stem, some growing upward toward the top of the plate, some growing downward toward the bottom. Above the flower, at the top center, a butterfly faces downward toward the center of the plate. To the right of the flower on the right side of the plate's rim, another butterfly turns inward to the left, also toward the center of the plate.

Round white porcelain plate with wavy brown-edged rim, painted with large plant and smaller insects. A central flower with long blade-shaped leaves and six small pink flowers drooping from the stem. Surrounding the flower, various insects. At one o'clock, a multicolored butterfly in red, yellow, teal, and purple; at four o'clock, a small oval-shaped blue beetle; at eight o'clock, a pink and red winged insect; at nine o'clock, a blue caterpillar crawling on a leaf of the plant; at ten o'clock, a small round pink beetle; at twelve o'clock, a blue and red fly.

A glazed porcelain french plate with a gold scalloped rim, manufactured by Pillvuyt and Vie, in 1880. It appears to be one of a series of fanciful renderings of mouse figures in various scenes in nature. The plate features a landscape with a steep mountain oriented to the right side of the plate where the dominant scene of the plate is focused. Portrayed are two mouse figures climbing this mountain. They appear tired and weary. One mouse dressed in rose pink with polka dots of yellow and trimmed in green, is holding a yellow hat in one hand and a walking stick in the other. There is a sense of weariness and exhaustion in the facial expression of this mouse as it appears to contemplate the arduous trip up this steep mountain. The other mouse’s face is angled away from view and is seen wearing its yellow hat and holding a walking stick with two hands also appearing exhausted. This steep mountain which is white is seen with green plantings and leaves of various sizes and shades. Plants with purple flowers on the right of the mouse figures decorate the plate further. In contrast to the strong and colorful depiction of the two mouse figures, the background is all faintly rendered. On the scene’s far left is a pale simply outlined house with rooftop and windows. Beyond the house is a faint view of a wood-like setting with a variety of trees. Shown in the rear distance, is a subtle view of mountain ranges. In the front bottom of the scene are droppings of leaves in shades of green.
