"Hans Sloane" Botanical Plate Plate

This is a plate. It was manufactured by Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory and after Georg Dionysius Ehret. It is dated 1753–1756 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is soft paste porcelain, vitreous enamels. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, established in London in 1745, was a short walk from the Chelsea Physic Garden, where the firm’s painters had access to an abundance of plants for in-person study. This book Figures of the Most Beautiful… contains drawings of more than 300 specimens of plants from the Chelsea Physic Garden, which were referenced for the decoration on these ten plates. While fashionable in subject matter and style, flowers, insects, and leaves also played a practical role to disguise flaws and imperfections in the plates’ delicate porcelain and glaze

An anatomical model of a Ricinus Communis comonly known as a a castor bean or castor oil plant.Three prickly forked magenta extensions rise out of a greenish brown bulb with upward curved spines. Folded browish green leaves hang underneath with a thick green stem. It is glued to a vertical rod which is mounted on a stepped base with an affixed paper label.

A large branch with wide pointed yellow-green leaves decorates most of the plate, curving up and over from the left side and ending in a cascade of small purple-pink flowers at three o'clock. Surrounding the branch, smaller insects and flowers. Just above the bottom leaf, a small oval-shaped blue beetle; at five o'clock, a spotted yellow and purple butterfly; at seven o'clock, small trumpet-shaped pale blue morning glories.

Round white porcelain plate with wavy brown-edged rim, painted with a large pancratium flower and insects. Filling the plate, broad pointed leaves in green and yellow-green. Filling the top half of the plate, a cluster of large purple flowers with long pointed petals and curling yellow stamens atop a blue stem. Surrounding the flower, smaller insects in various colors. At twelve o'clock, a blue and green winged insect; at eight o'clock, a pale purple and yellow butterfly; at ten o'clock, a purple and yellow winged insect.

This tall, white vase is glass with pink flowers and green stems. It is slim with a large foot, with the neck tapering inward to an opening smaller than the largest width of the vase. The largest width of the vase tapers inward towards the bottom, the vessel eventually twisting itself as a transition into the foot. The flower's stems run almost the full height of the vase, just stopping before the neck and opening. The pink flowers hang languidly, in contrast to the pointy, sturdy leaves below them.

A rectangular section of wallpaper with a dense tangle of honeysuckle vines and flowers against a cream background. The curving vines have leaves in pale green and darker sage green. The flowers are starburst-shaped, with long thin petals in beige and light pink. The curves of the vines, leaves, and flowers create rhythm in the design. In the margins are printing marks, various lines and blobs of ink. Along the right margin, rotated ninety degrees clockwise, is 'Honeysuckle 263' in italics, and 'MORRIS & Co.' in a large sans serif.
