This is a Drawing. It is dated 1926 and we acquired it in 1958. Its medium is graphite, blue and violet crayon, brush and silver paint on tracing paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Designer and decorator Jules Bouy embraced the use of wrought iron in decorative furnishings. In these renderings for the dining room of Miss Agnes Miles Carpenter on the upper east side of Manhattan, Bouy proposes a holistic interior scheme that features iron furniture set against white walls with accent colors of gray and blue. These elegant drawings, which are made with graphite and blue crayon, highlight the modernity of iron as a decorative material and as an organizing theme in interior design.

A drawing, rendering of door wall elevation of dining room created using graphite and colored crayon on tracing paper (used for several iterations). The rectangular shape of the wall on a horizontal orientation with two double doors possessing eight nature-like panels and blue handles includes a roof design drawn of three horizontally placed curves that grow in pitch. Located between the double doors is a sculpture resting on a pedestal constructed of a short wrought iron fluted column. To the right and left of the double doors are wrought iron U-formed pedestals with showcases for two objects balancing the design and overlap a gridded design on the wall. Iron work accents adorn the design at edges at both walls, where the wall meets the roof and possibly around the double doors. The photograph captures the drawing with a white border.

Lithographic poster ad in landscape orientation for the Parisian gallery of ironsmith Edgar Brandt. At the top of the poster, three lines of black, all uppercase letters read “Galerie / Edgar Brandt / 27 Boulevard Malherbes Paris”. The name EDGAR BRANDT dominates the upper section and its letters are highlighted with bead-like motifs that recall a decorative element used in wrought iron designs. At the center of the poster, a square frame contains an opulent motif of decorative ironwork, with two curved leaves symmetrically supporting three fan-like stylized flowers resembling a papyrus motif, of which the central one is largest. This curvilinear wrought iron motif is balanced on either side by an alphabetical list of names of over 30 designers represented in the gallery that includes for instance Daum and Lalique. At the bottom of the poster, one last line of text reads “Art décoratif contemporain” (contemporary decorative arts). The text and image are superimposed over curving light brown stylized floral and leaf line drawings that fill out the background and recall decorative elements of metalwork designs. The poster text, illustration and background reflect elegance.
