Drawing, Designs for Tall Flower Glasses, Ashtrays, Table Ornament

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Oswald Haerdtl, Stefan Rath and O. E. Wagner and manufactured by J. & L. Lobmeyr. It is dated ca. 1926 and we acquired it in 1958. Its medium is graphite on tracing paper, lined. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The three designs for glass objects featured in this drawing are depicted in life-size. They strongly resemble objects from Lobmeyr’s famed "Ambassador" set and may have also been used in conjunction with Miss Agnes Miles Carpenter’s custom order. Several prominent and varied designers are affiliated with this drawing, underscoring the nexus of creative activity in Vienna and cross-media design collaborations at this time.

Our curators have highlighted 6 objects that are related to this one. Here are three of them, selected at random:

Tall, slightly flared footless vase of clear glass with ten paneled sides. On two opposite sides are five handles. The handles are spiral-shaped and remind of the tendrils of climbing plants or of young, rolled up, fiddlehead fern leaves, that seem to arise from the base of the vase. They are arranged in a graduated series of declining size, with the largest one at the top of the vase. They are stacked, touching each other. While the body of the vase is clear, the handles appear frosted with a satin finish, and oblique grooving on their underside. The vase appears made of molded and cut glass.
