Sidewall, Amazone

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by André Groult. It is dated 1925–28 and we acquired it in 1958. Its medium is machine printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Groult was an important designer of the French art deco style. This wallpaper follows in that vein with its bold styling and uncluttered design. The stylized figures in riding gear, well-groomed animals, and tropical flora, suggest leisure pursuits on country estates. This design conveys the patterned surfaces and curved forms frequently used in Groult interiors and furnishings.

A woven textile sample with a forest scene formed by staggered repeats of grouped black leafless saplings out of which leaps a gold gazelle (or deer) followed by a silver bird, against a brilliant green satin background. Each gazelle leaps in one direction with their head turned back to face the bird approaching in flight with outstretched talons. The orientation is reversed when the motif repeats on the next line, with two gazelle/bird pairs per line. Some of the saplings’ branches are bent in the same direction of the gazelle's leap. This, together with the posture of the gazelle and of the bird, suggests a dynamic of hunting, hiding and fleeing.

On a vivid, orange background, a highly stylized pattern of leafless blue trees with flowers rendered in a minimalistic style as off-white spirals. The trees are represented as trunks with long, flowing, curved, whip-like branches. Because of the presence of flowers and absence of leaves these trees remind of cherries, or other trees that flower before producing leaves.
