Textile (Austria)

This is a Textile. It was made for Wiener Werkstätte. We acquired it in 1958. Its technique is printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This cloth has vertical lines of colors that blend and transition into each other both abruptly and slowly. The color striations are saturated lines of azure, white, magenta, yellow, cyan, and mauve but each transition into a lighter color on either side or one side, the gradients complementing the most saturated areas. For example: the darkest magenta transitions into a rose pink around it, and the most saturated yellow transitions into a light yellow. Toward the middle, the colors are more abrupt in transition and look more side-by-side in arrangement, but still very subtle transition around them. From left to right, they color order is: azure to light blue to white, a thin magenta line with light pink on either side, a light yellow to a saturated cornflower yellow, slight strip of green and then abruptly cyan. The cyan touches an abrupt strip of rose, an thin line of light blue, an abrupt strip of black or deep blue, and back to azure. The azure repeats the longer transition from blue to a white, magenta surrounded by light pink, light yellow to cornflower yellow, and lastly three abrupt strips of cyan, rose pink, and cyan on the right hand side. All together, this fabric was made on a block-printed on a silk weave.
