Bracelet (Italy)
This is a Bracelet. It was carved by Filippo Tignani. It is dated 1867 and we acquired it in 1959. Its medium is gold, stone. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The ancient Greek technique of cameo portraiture found new popularity during the Neoclassical movement in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Carved by Filippo Tignani, this bracelet prominently features a pietra dura – or “hard stone” – portrait of its donor’s father, Frederick Augustus Chauncey. The portrait, carved atop a highly polished black stone surface, is stylish in its versatility, as the framed cameo detaches to become a brooch or pendant.
