Dark black blue textile with offset paisley pattern in columns. The textile has a mild sheen. The pattern consists of two floral sprays wrapping around a central floral arrangement forming an oval. Small flowers in red and blue surrounded by green leaves line the exterior on a thin yellow branch, small buds line in the interior. The left spray wraps up and over the right. At center a symmetrical floral arrangement with various flowers in blue, green, red, and yellow. The bottom of the arrangement centers on a blue and red flower. A yellow stem extends from this flower with two short downward curved branches with red flowers on either side. The exterior floral sprays connect at this stem.

Textile (England)

This is a Textile. It is dated ca. 1840 and we acquired it in 1959. Its medium is cotton and its technique is mordant painted and dyed and resist dyed (chintz) on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Using cotton, dye techniques, and motifs imported from India, Manchester built a cotton printing empire. Starting in the 18th century, Manchester became one of the leading exporters of cotton fabrics.

It is credited Museum purchase from Au Panier Fleuri Fund.
