Shawl (France)

This is a Shawl. It is dated 1920–29 and we acquired it in 1960. Its medium is silk, metallic thread (wound on silk core) and its technique is jacquard woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Well-dressed women in the 1920s were passionate about shawls. A shawl was a chic way to add a decorative note to an outfit. This shawl is a sumptuous example—woven with gold metallic threads that glisten against the black background, with a lush wreath of bold red roses surrounding a golden sunburst. It would have made a powerful fashion statement when worn with an elegant chemise.

This object was donated by Rodman A. Heeren. It is credited Gift of Rodman A. Heeren.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 144.1 × 152.4 cm (56 3/4 × 60 in.)
