Sample Book, Standard Color Card of America, 9th Edition

This is a Sample book. It is dated 1960 and we acquired it in 1960. Its medium is label: board covers, printed cardboard pages, silk samples. It is a part of the Textiles department.

When World War I blocked the import of quality dyes from Germany, American textile, ribbon, leather, straw, and feather manufacturers formed the Textile Color Card Association of the United States to facilitate color coordination across the fashion trades. Subscribers received standard color cards for the spring and fall seasons each year.

An acrylic and polyester color blanket woven with chenille yarns. The blanket consists of a grid five columns by nine rows where shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet range from pastels to grey-ish hues. The right-most column of the grid is pastel in shade, moving to the grey tones on the left, and the rows are yellow to orange to red to green to blue to indigo to violet from top to bottom.

A color trend book standing vertically and open so that the left hand page displays text, stating [NATURALISTE], [NATURALIST] in black capitals, and seven square blocks of color, the four on the left are earthen tones, brown, yellow ochre, olive green, and emerald green, and the three on the right are crimson, blue and violet. The right hand page illustrates a landscape at sunset, with a brown bear standing on some moss-covered rocks in the foreground, overlooking a lake in the distance. Infront of the book are three sheets of color samples using colored thread. There are twelve threads on each sheet in four rows and three columns. The first sheet covers cream, yellow, orange, brown, pink and red. The second sheet covers shades of blue and purple. The third shades of green, brown, white, grey and black.
