This is a Poster. It was designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and printed by Johnson, Riddle & Company Ltd. and Johnson, Riddle & Company Ltd. and made for (as the client) Underground Electric Railways of London Company Ltd.. It is dated 1915, printed 1916 and we acquired it in 1963. Its medium is lithograph. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Kauffer’s love of landscape was a good match for his first Underground poster commissions, which illustrated scenic destinations outside London that were reachable by public transport. For his first solo exhibition, Kauffer included the poster designs for The North Downs and Godstone alongside paintings and drawings that depicted the French and English countryside.

This object was donated by Mrs. Edward McKnight Kauffer. It is credited Gift of Mrs. E. McKnight Kauffer.

Painterly-looking stylized print featuring, in the center, a large tree with branches stretched upwards into clusters of green leaves; creating a solid green area at the top with large, white, all caps, serif text: 'OXHEY WOODS' layered on top fitted across the width. The bark of the tree is a dark gray/almost black with long solid brush-like strokes with shades of beige to brown layered on top, appearing like tiles following the curvature of the trunk and branches. Below the tree an organic cloud-like shadow in a deep green on top of the lighter green grass and a blue on a yellow road; begins in the left corner foreground and curves diagonally to the right and upwards and bends around the right of the tree. The winding road continues into the background and cuts through a group of a variety of smaller-scaled, less detailed trees. The lower left-hand corner is scattered with various toadstools.
