Poster, Exhibition of Modern Art

This is a Poster. It was designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and printed by Dangerfield Printing Company Ltd. and made for (as the client) The London Group. It is dated 1919 and we acquired it in 1963. Its medium is lithograph. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The London Group formed in 1913 with the aim of regularly exhibiting a broad spectrum of British modern art. Elected secretary of the group in 1917, Kauffer designed the posters and invitation cards announcing its exhibitions. In his 1919 poster, Kauffer illustrated a pair of joined figures in a confrontational stance. The masklike faces are suggestive of a modernist trend among European artists who turned to African and tribal sculpture as a source of inspiration and appropriation.

This object was donated by Mrs. Edward McKnight Kauffer. It is credited Gift of Mrs. E. McKnight Kauffer.

Centered in the upper right a black ground vertical rectangle with large white circle, barely distinguishable, behind the counter-clockwise alternating spirals of dark gray, blue, splatter-like dots that swirl over to the black background. A stripped border of blue, red, beige, fitted along the top with orange, all caps text: 'WINTER SALES' below. Orange, black, and blue silhouettes of figures in dresses with curved folded bodies as if falling or dancing, appear layered on top of the spiral is various sizes along the center vertically. Centered and filling the white negative space below, in beige, all caps text: 'ARE /BEST REACHED BY THE / UNDERGROUND.'
