![A brush and gouache on heavy white paper costume design for the character Love in the 1947 opera Checkmate. In the center is a seated figure in profile facing our right, with a brown eye visible beneath a yellow mask. The figure wears yellow armor covering the torso with a gold ribbed necklace and a deep blue pointed helmet, with pale blue plumage and a yellow pennant displaying a gold star which waves to our left. Under the armor the figure wears a pale blue shirt and trousers. A deep blue cloak, with blue and yellow lapels, falls across the chest, down the back and across the right arm. The figure is gloved, one pale blue on the right hand and one deep blue on the left hand in which is held a black rook chess piece. The designer has inscribed color notations in graphite: in the upper center, with an arrow pointing to the helmet is inscribed [blue shiny], while in the lower right is inscribed [yellow equals gold shiny]. In the bottom right in black ink the designer has inscribed [Love 'Checkmate' E.
