Drawing, Design for "5 On Revolutionary Art"

This is a Drawing. It was designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and made for (as the client) Wishart Limited. It is dated 1935 and we acquired it in 1963. Its medium is brush and blue, red, and black gouache, graphite. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

5 on Revolutionary Art featured a series of papers delivered at a symposium hosted by the Artists’ International Association, an organization that united artists against fascism. The work of typographer Jan Tschichold, who had fled Nazi Germany, made a significant impression on Kauffer in the 1930s. For this book cover, he emulated Tschichold’s approach to achieving clarity of message with sans serif type, sharp geometries, and deliberate use of white space.

This object was donated by Mrs. Edward McKnight Kauffer. It is credited Gift of Mrs. E. McKnight Kauffer.

Square poster with four rows of rectangles. The top three rows are split into two rectangles that rotate between purple and red backgrounds. Each rectangle holds a six-digit date. The numbers are red and green on the purple backgrounds and purple and green on the red backgrounds. In between the rectangles there are black bands with yellow text under each date. The bottom row has the letters AIGA in all capital letters in purple on a black background. Each letter is separated by a paragraph of center justified text in white with some words highlighted in yellow. A yellow band with the words TUESDAYS BY DESIGN in all capital letters repeat across the top of the poster. A red band with three rows of small black text borders the bottom.
