Vertically rectangular shawl. The center features a light green square, with a pair of shapes -- each resembling a fly's wings -- facing each other. Dense, wavy lines border these shapes within the green square. Outside of the square, the remainder of the shawl is mostly dark brown and dark green. The shawl is divided into three horizontal rectangles, with the green square placed in the center of the middle rectangle. Each rectangle is filled with wavy, light brown lines, overlapping to form ribbon-like patterns. The shawl is bordered in a dark green floral pattern.

Shawl (India)

This is a Shawl. It is dated 1830–1850 and we acquired it in 1966. Its medium is wool and its technique is twill tapestry weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The serpentine shapes that make up this pattern reveal how much the paisley cone stretched over time. The pattern of blue-green paisleys in the background is nearly obscured by an overlay of serpentine forms in off-white.
