Plate (USA)

This is a plate. It was decorated by Francis Lycett and Sidney T. Callowhill and manufactured by New York Faience Manufacturing Company. It is dated 1886–1890 and we acquired it in 1939. Its medium is glazed and gilt porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In the late 19th century the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn was home to at least a dozen major ceramics firms including the Faience Manufacturing Company. This plate exhibits two signatures of the firm’s production: raised gold paste decoration and a dark blue background. This piece’s octagonal form with a band along the rim and the attenuated floral decorations recall Japanese aesthetics.

A glazed octagonal tile with a pale green border and pastel green ground. In the center is a stylized white lotus blossom with a yellow center emerging from an emerald green flat leaf. Beside the blossom on the left is a small white bud, and behind it on the right are pale green water reeds.

Dishes and cups, in assorted shades of light brown and off-white, are approximately arranged in two rows on a pale blue surface. From left to right, the front row featrures a stack of three flat plates, a larger white dish with a brown elliptical design in the center, and a similarly decorated lipped shallow dish to the right. Behind this row, again from left to right, is a solid light brown, shallow dish. Behind this dish is a white, handleless cup, which darkens in shade to a reddish-brown near the bottom. Next to the cup is a larger, off-white serving bowl, within which there is a smaller, light brown bowl. To its right are five cups, all without handles; three light brown cups stacked atop each other, and two off-white cups side-by-side. The latter are faintly shaded in a light, reddish-brown around the bottom. Two organic shapes, one resin-like and honey brown in color, and another, solid black crumpled object, are placed in the left center and to the far right corner of the display.
