Shawl Fragment (India)

This is a Shawl fragment. It is dated ca. 1835 and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is wool and its technique is twill tapestry weave with supplementary weft. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Fragments such as this allow us to focus on the large patterned border at each end of a shawl, called the phala. The hashiya is the narrow border running down the long edges of the shawl and the tanjir is the narrow border running above and below the phala.

This object was donated by Arthur W. Popper. It is credited Gift of Arthur W. Popper.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 41.5 × 31.5 cm (16 5/16 × 12 3/8 in.)
