Rectangular fragment of a woven shawl in red, blue, and tan featuring two repeats of a multicolored cone motif. The two cones fill the height and width of the shawl. The cones are comprised of four layers, a central teardrop encompassed by three lines of different floral patterns. All four layers culminate at top in concentric curls to the left. At the bottom of each cone are six feather-like leaves. The center of the cone on the right is filled more densely with red than the left. While the first layer around the teardrop on the left is more densely filled with red than the right. Otherwise the two cones are identical. The space around the cones is covered with dense embroidered flowers leaving little negative space. Multicolored band is stitched to each side. The border at top and bottom are comprised of two thin parallel red lines with a row of black dots. They are filled with the same dense floral pattern as the rest of the design. The top and bottom edges are frayed.

Shawl Fragment (India)

This is a Shawl fragment. It is dated ca. 1835 and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is wool and its technique is twill tapestry weave with supplementary weft. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Fragments such as this allow us to focus on the large patterned border at each end of a shawl, called the phala. The hashiya is the narrow border running down the long edges of the shawl and the tanjir is the narrow border running above and below the phala.
