Sidewall, Archie's Arms

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1994 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is screen-printed on vinyl. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

It is credited Museum purchase from Sarah Cooper-Hewitt and Friends of Wallcoverings Funds.

Sheet music cover. In the foreground is a derogatory depiction of an African-American male face that is crying. Two large tears appear underneath each eye. Behind the face are three white hands, all held up in a 'stop' position. Above the hands is the song's title, 'Quit Crying The Blues,' with tears eminating from the word 'blues.'

On a white background, seven hand prosthetics composed of varying materials is displayed in varying positions. On top are four of the hand displays, beginning with two light brown hands and a dark brown ball of the thumb. One is displayed palm down and the other, a top view with fingers curled down. Another set of two is on the right in the same display orientation. This set is in a darker brown color with a black middle section and ball of the thumb. Below are three of the models, all displayed palms up, in a varying combination parts. Displayed from left to right - a dark brown hand with a light gray side patch, light brown with a dark ball of the thumb, and a deep dark yellow hand with a mustard color ball of the thumb. Surrounding the hand prosthetics, are some of the customizable parts displayed as a single item. These include: different colored ball thumbs, side parts, and a color palette in squares used beneath each of the lower palms. Materials used are wood, leather, beech, cedar, acetate, wool and steel.
