Brush, 1890–1910

This is a brush. It was made by Luan Chang. It is dated 1890–1910 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is rolled, cast, repoussé, and punched silver; bristles. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Chinese and Japanese silver was made for export to the Western market, an earlier tradition dating to the 17th century that resumed in the mid-19th century. The dragon was featured on all types of forms, such as these brushes from a toilet set, coffee pots with dragon spouts, and bowls with dragon handles.

This object was donated by Fong Chow. It is credited Gift of Fong Chow.
