Sidewall (USA)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1875–1906 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is block printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Wallpaper imitating decorative wood paneling such as bead board. Regularly spaced channels or grooves give the design a tromp l’oeil effect creating a strong vertical which would make a wall appear taller. There is a long tradition of wood grain wallpapers and they have been produced by every printing technique.

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program and Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Funds.

Its dimensions are

Overall: 680.7 x 49.5 cm (22 ft. 4 in. x 19 1/2 in.)
