Clock (France)

This is a clock. It was manufactured by Léon Hatot. It is dated 1925–30 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is glass, plastic, metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Geoffrey Bradfield. It is credited Gift of Geoffrey N. Bradfield.

Analogue clock. Base is black, resembling a bracket facing upward, holding the rectangular shape of the clock's body. The sides and top are metal, as are the hands of the clock. The numbers are black and surrounded by a red border, whose shape resemebles grooves or gears of a watch. From the edges of the clock to the red border are shapes resembling triangles whose tips get cut off by the red circle. The shapes go around the red borer and alternate between grey and tan. Separating each of these shapes is a small, black rectangle placed along the adjacent edges of two shapes.

This clock has a layered, terraced shape like a pyramid or ziggurat. The staggered, angular forms seem to rise up and out from the stepped, footed rectangular base. The flat faces of some forms are decorated with bright robin’s egg blue, deep ultramarine blue, or black enamel; the rest of the clock is bright silvered bronze. The shape leading up to the round clock face is a tall narrow deep blue rectangle. Two flanking shapes, in bright blue and deep blue, angle out diagonally beneath the clock face. Small shapes in black and bright blue crown the top of the clock face. The small round cream-colored clock face has pale pink, deep blue, and black dots and triangles indicating the hours. Narrow triangles at 12, 4, and 8 point in toward the straight black clock hands. These shapes are repeated in the two patterned round accents below the clock face, with enamelled angular lines, circles, and half-circles in bright blue, deep blue, white, and black. The clock is incised at bottom right with the signature [JEAN GOULDEN].

This clock features a half-circle black onyx and white rock crystal dial atop a flat black onyx pedestal with four white rock crystal cushion feet. The center of the dial is black, with a translucent white carved design of swirling clouds with angular rays shooting out, like rays of light. Little wavy lines fan out around the black center, shaped to cup the numbers. The numbers are angular, shaped from glinting diamonds against the white border. From left to right, the dial is numbered 12, 1, 2, and so on, ending with 12 again on the right. A small arrow pointer is positioned between 3 and 4. The pedestal is a slab of highly reflective black onyx with sharp edges. Evenly spaced below the front edge are four ribbed, round feet in pinky-white rock crystal, like little cushions. Diamond notches above the feet make a sharp contrast to the black onyx.

Clock of square carved rock crystal with two nested white enamel and gold-numbered rings surrounding a circular medallion at center. The medallion depicts two putti sitting on clouds opposite each other, holding flowers up between them. The white-grey scene appears to be carved in low relief, in glass or rock crystal. Enclosing the medallion is a ring of white enamel set with gold Roman numerals, one through twelve; rosettes; and decorative borders. This ring is encircled at a little distance by a second similarly-decorated ring with a set of smaller Arabic numerals, one through thirty-one, bordered by a ring of close-set diamonds. The scrolled hour and minute hands are set with various diamonds; a diamond-set pointer extends to the outer ring to indicate the date. Four diamond rosettes accent the corners. The supporting strut appears through the clear space between the numeral rings.

A semi-mystery eight day clock viewed in an upright position facing forward with a stand in back supporting the clock. A thick beveled circular mount is fabricated in shiny rock crystal. A ring of small rose-cut diamonds set in platinum borders the chapter ring of white champleve enamel with gold Roman numerals representing the hours adorned with gold rosettes in between. A gold rope bezel encircles small gold dots that represent minutes. A narrower rope bezel outlines the translucent light blue enamel face exhibiting a Guilloche design where translucent enamel covers a mechanically engraved repetitive pattern. In this case, raised straight lines with several lower lines in between are radiating from the diamond encrusted center dial. A large five-pointed diamond encrusted star set in platinum indicates the hour hand and a smaller multi-pointed star set in platinum with a large central diamond indicates minutes, both able to rotate and appear to be floating in space. This clock would fit in the palm of your hand and is photographed in a frontal view reflected against a white surface.

A desk clock enclosed in a shiny rock crystal arch-formed surround with a circular chapter ring and dial. A ring of round diamonds; a bezel, encircles the black enamel chapter ring encrusted with large Roman numerals indicating hours with gold separating the numerals. A gold ring surrounds the numerals however the chapter ring could have shifted down because the gold ring is absent from viewing on the bottom. A ruyi design of a gold symmetrical cloud-like pattern, side-to-side, borders a carved green jade medallion with two cabochon sapphires and diamond encrusted hour and minute hands adorning the dial. Lower on the object are two topiary forms set on left and right corners carved from a large cabochon sapphire surrounded by black enamel set in gold prongs, diamonds as stem, with a green trapezoidal-formed polished jade pot and black enamel handles and base. The clock is photographed in an upright position where the only side visible is the front and is reflected against a white surface.
