An oval platter of blue and white, the white crackled ground decorated with blue Japanese-inspired transfer-printed decoration. The rim has a wide band of abstract geometric design of repeating trapezoids, with fine hatched lines, surrounding a narrow scalloped band. The center well is decorated with bands, medallions and panels of geometric motifs on the right, on the left is a circle showing a sailing vessel on water, superimposed on a forest landscape..

Excelsior Platter

This is a platter. It was manufactured by Old Hall Earthenware Co., Ltd.. It is dated ca. 1880 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is glazed earthenware with transfer-printed decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Old Hall Earthenware Company specialized in artistic designs for transfer-printed decoration onto earthenware and attracted the collaboration of the commercially minded Christopher Dresser. The abstraction, asymmetry, and medallions here show Japanese inspiration in motif and composition.

This object was donated by Brooklyn Museum. It is credited Gift of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Paul F. Walter Collection.

A hexagonal cream-colored plate with a circular indentation in the center. The plate has brown transfer-printed decoration of three birds in flight in the center amongst a blossoming tree which grows from the lowe left to the upper edges of the plate. In the lower section there is a geometric-patterned band of cubes with three evenly spaced roundels inside and wide petalled hyacinth-like flowers underneath.
