The plate has brown transfer-printed decoration, the top section shows ten birds in flight over a body of water with a boat and protruding fin. In the foreground there is a shoreline with a large bamboo like tree growing towards the top right and tropical flowering plants. The lower section is composed of a patterned band with different shaped panels, each containing various motifs including the night sky with a crescent moon, flowers, geometric patterns and repeating arabesques.

Melbourne Plate

This is a plate. It was manufactured by Gildea & Walker. It is dated ca. 1881-1885 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is glazed earthenware with transfer-printed decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

These ceramic objects are examples of the types of aesthetically sophisticated wares available to those with a modest income. All feature elements of Japanese design vocabulary: cranes, flowering branches, fans, mountainous landscapes, arabesque patterns, medallions, cross-hatched decoration, waves, an asymmetrical arrangement, and more.

A hexagonal cream-colored plate with a circular indentation in the center. The plate has brown transfer-printed decoration of three birds in flight in the center amongst a blossoming tree which grows from the lowe left to the upper edges of the plate. In the lower section there is a geometric-patterned band of cubes with three evenly spaced roundels inside and wide petalled hyacinth-like flowers underneath.
