Here we have a drawing of a tall radio at an angle. The radio is monochrome, primarily made of dark red, smooth wood that is shiny with white highlights. The radio is nearly cylindrical, with a grid pattern up the curved front. Above the main body is a decorative horizontal motif: five tiers that resemble a radiator grill, stacked one on top of the other. The topmost grill make the radio's main surface where there are three white buttons. From the drawn perspective, the back of the radio has a singular piece of wood that starts near the bottom and eventually curves into the very top to serve as a number station with dial, the whole window slighly angled upward.

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Alfons Bach and made for (as the client) Philco (Philadelphia Storage Battery Company). It is dated 1940s and we acquired it in 1998. Its medium is brush and dark brown ink, brown and white gouache, graphite, black crayon on tan paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Streamlined designs were often realized in metallic chromes and shiny plastics, but this design renders a futuristically styled radio cabinet in steam-bent wood. Bach’s designs for home products and furnishings often repurposed elements to suit other products: the grill-like form concealing the radio’s speakers also appears in Bach’s designs for cylindrical containers and a scale.
