As scientist, administrator, and conceptual trailblazer, Dr. Wortman participated in the origins, and helped to secure the eventual worldwide adoption, of systems or food crops research and production that have benefited millions of people in the poorer world./ As a strategist and author, he has helped convince professional and political leaderships that rural, agriculture-based development should receive their keenest attention. With decades of achievement still in front of him, he can look back on strong institutions, a wealth of well-trained people, and a published body of knowledge all bearing his indelible mark. We are particularly grateful for his thoughtful leadership of The Rockefeller Foundation from March 1979 to August 1980, and join to thank him and to wish him continued success.
