Cake Stand (Germany)

This is a cake stand. It was designed by Kristian Neureuther and manufactured by WMF Aktiengesellschaft. It is dated ca. 1930 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is glazed earthenware, metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Victor Wiener. It is credited Gift of Victor Wiener.

A white porcelain cakestand, with a round, shallow dish supported by an elegant, flaring fluted pedestal. The edges of plate and pedestal are decorated with a geometric gilt border. The cakestand is delicately enamel painted with vignettes of plants and anthropomorphized mice. Inside the dish, a pale grey mouse wearing a short grey jacket bears two golden-yellow baskets suspended from a carrying pole over its right shoulder. The mouse is stooped and holds a cane or walking stick in its left hand. Surrounding the mouse to the right are more baskets and a spray of greenery; below, short yellow flowers on wispy green stems; to the left, bamboo grows up behind a rickety brown fence; above, a branch of pale pink cherry blossom stretches across the plate. On the pedestal, a hunched pale grey mouse in a blue robe appears to read a long yellow scroll. To the right is a brown swing; to the left are large leaf sprigs, light green and orange-brown. Opposite the mouse, obscured by the curve of the pedestal, another mouse appears to read an open book.
