Sample, Ribbons

This is a Sample. It was designed by Alexander Hayden Girard and produced by Herman Miller Textiles and manufactured by American Art Textile Printing Company, Inc.. It is dated 1957 and we acquired it in 2000. Its medium is 66% cotton, 34% linen and its technique is screen printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Alexander Hayden Girard made an indelible (and colorful!) impact on 20th century modernist textile design. At the helm of Herman Miller’s textiles division, his playfulness provided a warm complement to the stark simplicity of furniture designs of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.
As its title suggests, Ribbons features overlapping, irregular vertical rectangles reminiscent of layered ribbon samples. Though printed in only three colors, the overlapping of bright, sheer colors--orange, red and violet-- produces additional shades and depth. The original design for the fabric, also in the Museum’s collection, is tissue paper collage, which has very much the same effect as the finished textile.

This object was donated by Alexander Hayden Girard. It is credited Gift of Alexander H. Girard.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 59.1 x 60 cm (23 1/4 x 23 5/8 in.)

It has the following markings

2 Herman Miller Textiles paper labels attached to lower right corner.
