Sidewall, Eiweiss

This is a sidewall. It was designed by Rosemarie Trockel and made by Patterson-Piazza, Inc.. It is dated 1998 and we acquired it in 2006. Its medium is screen printed and flocked on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This design was inspired by Rosemarie Trockel’s Egg White series of photographs, published in 1993. The artist would whip up egg whites, smear them onto a background, and photograph them. She would then have positives made of the negatives, which reversed the light and shadows. It is the silhouettes from these prints that form the design on Eiweiss.
Trockel is a sculptor, printmaker, and designer, and is a well-known figure in the contemporary art scene in Germany. Her work frequently confronts feminine stereotypes. She entered the international art scene in the 1980s and represented Germany in the Venice Biennale in 1999. She has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe and America.
Trockel is an important artist and adding her wallpaper to our collection will keep our group of artist-designed papers current. This paper is also a good example of contemporary flocking and would benefit our collection of 20th-century production.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Not to be Served for Breakfast.
