Dome-shaped Architectural Staircase Model

This is a Architectural Staircase Model. It is dated mid-19th century and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is walnut and beechwood. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This maîtrise (masterpiece) in the 17th-century Italian style, is one of the finest examples of the combination of architectural design and structure with staircase modeling.

In crisp black lines on cream-colored paper, two complex geometric forms on pedestals. At left, a hollow globe-shaped form composed of three-pointed stars, creating open diamond shapes. It is balanced on the point of a faceted cone-shaped pedestal with a wide, faceted circular base. At right, a globe-shaped form composed of five-pointed stars, creating open triangles. Within the form, a many-pointed star, each point a long triangular pyramid. The points project through the open spaces of the enclosing form. One point rests on the faceted cylindrical pedestal, ringed with triangles and rectangular blocks at its base. The faces of both forms are shaded with stippled, hatched, and crosshatched lines, creating the illusion of depth.

A wooden bookcase with a taller double-width center section and a shorter single-width section to right and left of the center. A variety of woods were used, in particular walnut and blackened cherry. The piece is embellished with inlays and there are six drawers, each with a bronze pull. The doors of the cabinet have glass panels and can be locked.
