Frieze (USA)

This is a Frieze. It was manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1915 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This pendant ornament would take the place of a frieze around the upper part of the wall. It is most likely part of a set that would include a matching striped sidewall. This type of ornament, which provided a very different look from a frieze, would be one of the few examples of its kind in the museum’s collection.

This object was donated by Theodore A. Gantz. It is credited Gift of Theodore A. Gantz.

Its dimensions are

Overall: 237 x 49.5 cm (7 ft. 9 5/16 in. x 19 1/2 in.)

It is inscribed

Printed in selvedge: "Birge - Made in U.S.A. 330".
