Knife (Netherlands)

This is a knife. It is dated ca. 1618 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is silver, steel, gilding. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf (American, 1887–1961). It is credited Bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf in memory of his mother, Adeline Emma Greenleaf.

Its dimensions are

L x W x D: 21.4 x 2.2 x 0.5 cm (8 7/16 x 7/8 x 3/16 in.)

It has the following markings

On baluster finials (a,b): swan (1893 and later French control mark for silver of unknown origin), and unidentified plant? and chevron mark. On blade (a,b): two worn marks.

It is inscribed

Engraved on side of handle (a,b): *JOHANNA*BOUWENS*1618
