Cake Serving Plate (Austria)

This is a Cake serving plate. It was designed by Franz von Zülow and manufactured by Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur. It is dated ca. 1925 and we acquired it in 2008. Its medium is molded, enameled, gilded and glazed hard paste porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Franz von Zülow, primarily a graphic designer, brought to ceramics the fantastical designs popular in Austrian fairy tales and seen in some of Joseph Urban’s theatrical work.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled A Piece of Cake.

It is credited Gift of the Estate of Edgar Sachs, from the Collection of Hilda G. and Edgar Sachs.
