Sidewall (England)

This is a sidewall. It is dated ca. 1870 and we acquired it in 1943. Its medium is machine printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Views of Canadian tourist destinations set within frames, a convention that became popular after mid-century, probably in response to the British Reform Movement. Proponents of the movement thought the use of landscape scenes and tromp l’oeil effects on wallpaper were dishonest and belied the 2-dimensional aspect of the wall. Putting the scenes within a frame made them appear more like paintings than windows which seemed to have appeased the conformists.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of George Arnold Hearn.

  • Decorative Panel (France)
  • block-printed and hand painted on a combed background.
  • Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
  • 1931-45-63

Its dimensions are

H x W: 75.5 x 56 cm (29 3/4 x 22 1/16 in.)
