Rectangular shawl has a cream colored small square in its center with four floral-like figures (one in each corner). Bordering the center square are tiny flowers in a muted rust color and muted blue; this pattern is followed by a large paisley pattern that displays complex floral patterns within each paisley form. Pink, maroon, burgundy, as well as the continuation of cream and muted blue are also part of the make up of the larger paisley pattern, extending to the very edges of the shawl. The perimeter of the shawl is completed with cream colored fringe or tassel accents.

Shawl

This is a Shawl. It is dated ca. 1870 and we acquired it in 1944. Its medium is wool and its technique is printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Overlapping hook-tip paisleys create movement around the border of this shawl. The design plays with opacity, revealing the outlines of hidden layers of paisleys underneath.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
