Katagami, Flying Fish

This is a Katagami. It is dated late 19th–early 20th century and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is mulberry paper (kozo washi) treated with fermented persimmon juice (kakishibu), silk threads (itoire). It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Norvin Hewitt Green.

Worker holds an undetermined tool that touches an irregular white hexagonal tile.The tile is attached to a seawall composed of closely placed, cut rectangular stones in neutral colors. Bottom-most stones are heavily water-damaged.There are four tiles affixed to the wall in what might be called a four leaf clover pattern. The tiles are the same shape with cut-outs of different-sized piercings. At the center of each plaque, the holes are larger and fewer.Smaller and more plentiful holes are near the edge. Photo right shows the hands of another workman.
