Katagami, Plant Vignettes

This is a Katagami. It is dated late 19th–early 20th century and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is cut mulberry paper treated with persimmon tannin and silk thread. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Norvin Hewitt Green.

A hexagonal cream-colored plate with a circular indentation in the center. The plate has brown transfer-printed decoration of three birds in flight in the center amongst a blossoming tree which grows from the lowe left to the upper edges of the plate. In the lower section there is a geometric-patterned band of cubes with three evenly spaced roundels inside and wide petalled hyacinth-like flowers underneath.

A circular cream-colored plate with a circular indentation in the center. The plate has brown transfer-printed decoration, the top section shows ten birds in flight over a body of water with a boat and protruding fin. In the foreground there is a shoreline with a large bamboo like tree growing towards the top right and tropical flowering plants. The lower section is composed of a patterned band with different shaped panels, each containing various motifs including the night sky with a crescent moon, flowers, geometric patterns and repeating arabesques.
