Sidewall, New England

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1923–24 and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is machine-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This paper is a reproduction of an earlier Gothic revival design. Elaborate architectural ornaments frame a window looking out on a hilly landscape with a castle along a river. While the design is likely an accurate copy of the original document, the colors have been changed to those more fashionable in the 1920s.

It is credited Gift of the Women's Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association.

Its dimensions are

65 x 55.5 cm (25 9/16 x 21 7/8 in.)

It is inscribed

Printed on selvedge: "Birge, 2404-4. Made in U.S.A."
