Sidewall (England)
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Walter Crane and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1875–1900 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is block-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Walter Crane held a fascination with medieval and classical art, a period also popular among his peers in the Arts and Crafts movement. Medieval woodcuts and illuminated manuscripts influenced his designs. Crane filled this formal wallcovering with historical icons—an urn, a Tudor rose, Corinthian columns, quatrefoil blossoms, and acanthus scrolls—that would have turned the domestic interior into a neoclassical fantasy.
