Dinner Plate (USA)
This is a Dinner plate. It was design team member: Davin Stowell, Tucker Viemeister, John Lonczak, Annie Breckenfeld, Brent Markee, Linda Celantano and Tom Dair and manufactured by Copco and firm: Smart Design, Inc.. It is dated ca. 1985 and we acquired it in 1987. Its medium is melamine plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
New York based product design firm Smart Design employed a team of designers to create a set of dinnerware for Copco, a house wares company originally founded in 1960 by Sam Farber, who also founded OXO Good Grips in 1989. The brightly colored Copco plates are made of melamine, a type of plastic that is very durable and comes in a variety of hues and patterns. Melamine is scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and can be manufactured inexpensively, keeping costs low. The customizable line can be mixed and matched, giving users the freedom to create a unique set.
