Print, Title Page, from Nouveaux Livre de Parterres (New Book of Garden Beds)

This is a Print. It was designed by Daniel Marot and published by Pierre Husson. It is dated ca. 1700 and we acquired it in 1988. Its medium is etching and engraving on white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Marot’s “Nouveau livre de parterres”, published while he was working in Holland, features a series of elaborate and imaginative designs for garden beds. This title page includes four different designs, as a preview of the many others boasted in his publication. Here Marot playfully hems in the untamed forest of trees at the top of the print, giving way to the elaborately ordered landscape design. This idea is clearly inspired by the classical vision of Man taming nature, exemplified by André Le Nôtre in the gardens of Versailles. Marot’s choice of providing several different propositions as early as the front page, whilst exhibiting his talent, also illustrates his flexibility in adapting to clients’ needs and desires. This type of representation became very popular amongst designers during the course of the 18th century, not only for gardens but for all sorts of designs, ranging from those destined for objects to variations on sophisticated decorative schemes for residences.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
