Easy Edges Lounge Chair
This is a Lounge chair. It was designed by Frank O. Gehry. It is dated ca. 1971 and we acquired it in 1988. Its medium is cut corrugated cardboard, masonite. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Gehry introduced his “Easy Edges” series in 1969 as a means of mass-producing furniture composed of an unusual but inexpensive material. The furniture, such as this lounge chair, was made of layered corrugated cardboard strengthened on its flat sides by Masonite, allowing the textured edges to remain visible. Although he intended the series as an inexpensive alternative to popular bentwood furniture, Gehry discontinued it in 1973 when sale prices became too high.
It is credited Gift of William Woolfenden.
