Pippa Folding Stool

This is a Folding stool. It was designed by Peter Coles and Rena Dumas and fabricated by Hermès. It is dated 1985–87 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is pearwood, leather, brass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Designed by Peter Coles and Rena Dumas—the latter who also designed leather goods and interiors for Hermès—this stool was part of the Pippa line of folding furniture, which included a matching writing desk and chaise longue. The stool, with a refined, minimal aesthetic, speaks of Hermès’ luxury style through materials. Dumas has said of folding furniture: “because of its complexity, [it] must be made with only perfect materials, impeccably finished.”

This object was donated by Hermès. It is credited Gift of Hermès S.A..
