Monkey Figure

This is a figure. It was manufactured by Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. It is dated 1930–40 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is porcelain, enamel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

It is credited The Henry and Ludmilla Shapiro Collection; Partial gift and partial purchase through the Decorative Arts Association Acquisition and Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program Funds.

A slightly tarnished silver fork is decoratively designed with its handle resembling two overlapping leaves. The leaves, which join together at the pointed tip, are textured with dotted lines stamped parallel with the fork tines. Through a small, slightly folded opening in-between the leaves, an animal's (monkey's?) face can be seen peering upward, its eyes wide and mouth open, and its hands grasping the top and bottom of the lower leaf. The rest of the animal's body can be seen underneath the handle.
