Gaiety Cocktail Shaker With Lid And Strainer

This is a cocktail shaker with lid and strainer. It was manufactured by Chase Brass & Copper Co.. It is dated ca. 1930 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is metal (chrome plated), enamel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Mel Byars. It is credited Gift of Mel Byars.

A shining silver-colored cocktail service, with gleaming, reflective surfaces. Centered on the square tray is a tall, cylindrical cocktail shaker, with a smaller cylindrical cap and vertical ridges on the body. Circling the shaker are six stemmed cups with short, cylindrical bowls, about the same size as the shaker cap; long slender stems; and flat round bases. The interiors of the cups are brushed, matte metal. The square tray is like a picture frame, with an inset area and ridged, beveled edges stepping down to the level of the table.

A stylized cocktail shaker with an elongated silver oval cylinder in the shape of a aerodynamic Zeppelin airship with three main sections and capped on both ends, the left side tilted skyward. Faint vertical lines can be seen along part of the larger cap on the left which sits on a rectangular-shaped rest that extends its support to the middle of the object. On the right smaller end are three thin triangular fins, each tilted and rounded at the tip and jutting from the cylinder cap. The bottom fin rests on the surface.

A mostly silver-plate cocktail shaker with a U-form dominating the bottom segment, also known as a spun hemisphere, with an angled base prone in an outward direction at the bottom. In an upward direction are two steps inward to a tall cylindrical body resembling a form of a skyscraper with two more steps out and three shallow steps inward leading to a lid with a neck and a red-orange Catalin (polymer) stopper that remains inserted during pouring. The photograph captures the cocktail shaker in a front view against a medium gray background.

This owl looks remarkably like a silver sculpture but is in fact a cocktail shaker. Perched on a detachable base, the owl is sleek in design but fairly true-to-form in the animal's features and overall sculptural style. It is monochrome, has a smooth surface, and you can see layers of feathers on its head, at the bottom of its wings, and near its feet. There is a small indentation around its neck to suggest that is where you can remove the top and mix the drink in its body.
