Stool (USA)

This is a stool. It was designed by Gilbert Rohde. It is dated ca. 1935 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is steel, enamel, vinyl. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Gilbert Rohde, most well-known for his designs for Herman Miller, also created simple, modern, modular pieces for smaller manufacturers like the Troy Sunshade Company, which produced a line of his tubular steel furniture in the 1930s. Rohde, who became familiar with the bent-steel work of European designers during an overseas trip in 1927, believed the machine was the tool of his era and steel its material.

This object was donated by Mel Byars. It is credited Gift of Mel Byars.
