Sidewall, Modernistic
This is a Sidewall. It was manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1927 and we acquired it in 1992. Its medium is machine-printed paper, embossed. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Burchfield is one of the most renowned American watercolorists of the twentieth century, but is less well known as a wallpaper designer for M. H. Birge and Sons in Buffalo, New York, from 1921 until 1929. While a number of his wallpapers were based on his paintings, Modernistic is the result of the Birge company asking him to design a modern wallpaper. While the least representative of Burchfield’s style of painting, it became one of his most popular wallpapers.
It is credited Gift of Edna Lindemann.
Its dimensions are
H x W: 118 × 56.2 cm (46 7/16 × 22 1/8 in.) Repeat H: 58.7 cm (23 1/8 in.)
It is inscribed
Printed in left selvedge: "Birge - Made in U.S.A. 3960"; printed in right selvedge: "Designed by Burchfield."
