Chef De Piece (France)

This is a chef de piece. It was produced by LeLievre Heutte Vimeux & Comp.. It is dated 1777–90 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is linen warp, cotton weft and its technique is block-printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Cora Ginsburg. It is credited Gift of Cora Ginsburg.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 71 cm (28 in.). Weft: 83.5 cm (32 3/4 in.) Both selvages are present. Pattern: The size of the minimum unit and the printing blocks are the same (determined by registration marks left by the blocks): Height: 25.5 cm (10 in.). Width: 20 cm. (8 in.).

It is inscribed

Several stamped impressions on back: Within frame,(in black) " MANUFACTURE DE LIEVRE HEUTTE VIMEUX & COMP. AROUEN BON TEINT 1771". (in black) "5757", "23", "337" and the initials "CSB" within a heart printed twice. (in paler blue-gray) "97" and two or three unreadable stamps one of which contains the letters "CRETTE ??".
