Textile With Chef De Piece (France)

This is a Textile with chef de piece. It was made by Oberkampf & Cie.. It is dated 1770–75 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is linen warp, cotton weft and its technique is block-printed. blocks for floral stripe: 30.5cm (12 in.) x 16.5cm (6 1/2 in.) blocks for geometric stripe" 30.5 cm (12 in.) x 10 cm (4 in.) block marks are visible. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Cora Ginsburg. It is credited Gift of Cora Ginsburg.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 132 cm (52 in.). Weft: 79.5 cm (31 1/4 in.) Both selvedges present. Pattern: Height of repeat: 30.5 cm (12 in.). Because stripes are offset width of full repeat is not present.

It is inscribed

At one end of the fabric the factory mark in use from 1762 to 1783. Other block printed marks on front are: MR enclosed in partial box in deep red, partial TS enclosed in pink box, indistinct PP enclosed in box in blueand partially readable numbers including 26 and 94 in grey. On back; IC? enclosed in box in olive and J.I in black; also D3205.
