Chef De Piece (France)

This is a chef de piece. It was company: Weber Pere et fils. It is dated ca. 1850 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block-printed on plain weave with blocks for red, pink, brown, black, blue and yellow. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Cora Ginsburg. It is credited Gift of Cora Ginsburg.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 67.5 cm (26 1/2 in.) Weft: 86.5 cm (34 in.). Both selvedges present. Pattern: Height of repeat: 47 cm (18 1/2 in.) Width of repeat: 42 cm (16 1/2 in.). Arranged as a straight repeat.

It is inscribed

Stamps at bottom edge: "MANUFACTURE DE TOILES PEINTES DE WEBER PERE ET FILS. S.MARIE / Ht RHIN" in black within box and "D. Schoene" within an oval frame repeated four times; in red, pink, brown and black. Also: large "3" in black and "M.Turg" within frame in blue. All above stamps are on the front. On back: a partial stamp within an oval frame ending in ".ER"
